It’s been a week of literary awards in New Zealand, with the Sir Julius Vogel Awards for Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror and the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.
We are thrilled to announce that WORD writers took out some of the top award categories in each.
SIR JULIUS VOGEL AWARDS
Best Novella/Novelette: AJ Fitzwater for No Man’s Land
Best Collected Work: AJ Fitzwater, Cinrak the Dapper
Best Fan Production/Publication: Cassie Hart
Services to Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror: Cassie Hart
Also winners on the night were Andi C. Buchanan (Best Fan Writing), who appears in the New Regent Street Pop-Up Festival, and Octavia Cade (Best Novel for The Stone Wētā) who appeared in 2020. Sascha Stronach, who is also appearing this year, took out the 2020 award for Best Novel with his book Dawnhounds.

Best Young Adult Novel: Shilo Kino, Pōrangi Boy
Wright Family Foundation Esther Glen Award for Junior Fiction: Tania Roxborogh, Charlie Tangaroa and the Creature from the Sea
Margaret Mahy Book of the Year: Tania Roxborogh, Charlie Tangaroa and the Creature from the Sea
