Fifty years ago, inspired by the Black Panthers, a group of young leaders founded the Polynesian Panther Party to push back against systemic racism like the Dawn Raids. One of those founders was the brilliant Dr Melani Anae QSO, Marsden Award recipient and expert on ethics and Pasifika identity and leadership. She is joined by fellow Panther Rev Alec Toleafoa, whose long-term work involves the care of people in urban street communities, youth and adult custodial and residential settings, and developing youth leadership. In conversation with emerging leader Okirano Tilaia, they reflect on the apology for the Dawn Raids, and Melani’s book The Platform, detailing five decades spent in peaceful resistance, educating New Zealand about ongoing racism, and Pasifika empowerment.
